Infrared is truly the best detoxification treat you can give yourself. In a regular sauna the heat penetrates your surface skin. The heat is really only warming up the air around you, whereas in an infrared sauna, the heat penetrates deep into your subcutaneous fat cells. Yup … ya heard right—I said fat cells! You see, toxins get stored in our fat cells. Our fat cells become a safe haven for heavy metals and chemicals, such as mercury, cadmium and lead; pesticides; herbicides and BPA.
Infrared is one of the best ways to help eliminate these toxins. Our skin has the ability to access these fat stores through sweating. Regular exposure to infrared can help trigger heat shock proteins (HSPs), which can prevent cellular damage by directly scavenging free radicals and helping to maintain glutathione levels. What is also interesting is that exposure to heat has been shown to increase life span (by up to 15 percent) in flies and worms, a benefit that is attributed to HSPs. One particular HSP (the HSP70 gene) has also been associated with increased longevity, which suggests there may be antiaging benefits to regular heat stress.
